Nike vs. Adidas WC2026: Full COS Scorecard, OCEAN Profiles, and Framework Breakdowns

This is the data post behind the overview.

We ran Nike "Rip the Script" and Adidas "Backyard Legends" through COS (Communications Optimization System) across five psychological frameworks derived from 860+ peer-reviewed papers on personality psychology, persuasion, and cognitive framing. Scores run July 18, 2026, via public API (v2). All scores trace to raw API response files.

The Scorecard

Framework Nike Adidas Winner
HAPE (Engagement) 7.4 7.5 Adidas
Big Five (Personality Fit) 8.6 9.1 Adidas
Strategic Clarity 5.8 6.2 Adidas
Framing Strategy 7.4 7.8 Adidas
Persuasion / Business 7.4 6.5 Nike
COS Composite 7.32 7.42 Adidas

Framework wins: Adidas 4 / Nike 1.

OCEAN Audience Profiles

COS's audience profiling endpoint infers personality trait scores from campaign content signals, then compares them against the stated target audience. Higher confidence = more unambiguous signals in the content.

Nike "Rip the Script": OCEAN Profile

Confidence: 0.82 (high)

Trait Score B2B Target Gap
Openness 0.78 (High) 0.80 +0.05
Conscientiousness 0.32 (Low) 0.65+ -0.33
Extraversion 0.72 (High) 0.75 -0.03
Agreeableness 0.38 (Low) 0.40 -0.05
Neuroticism 0.55 (Moderate) 0.30 +0.25

Nike's campaign audience profile is the anti-conformist rebel: High Openness, High Extraversion, Low Agreeableness, Low Conscientiousness. Cross-domain curiosity. Comfort with chaos. Active rejection of traditional authority. Low tolerance for systematic framing.

COS infers peripheral-only ELM processing. Audiences are persuaded via cues (celebrity, aesthetic, emotional resonance) rather than central argument. The six-minute Hollywood chaos film is structurally matched to that route. No central argument exists in the campaign because the audience doesn't want one.

The Conscientiousness gap is the critical finding. Nike's content C score is 0.32. The B2B marketer segment Nike explicitly targets (creative directors, marketing VPs 25-45) scores 0.65 or higher on Conscientiousness. These professionals reached seniority through organized, systematic thinking. "Rip the Script" tells them to do the opposite.

The campaign resonates with the consumer Nike wants. It alienates the professional Nike needs.

Adidas "Backyard Legends": OCEAN Profile

Confidence: 0.78 (high)

Trait Score B2B Target Gap
Openness 0.62 (Moderate-High) 0.65 -0.03
Conscientiousness 0.68 (Moderate-High) 0.60 +0.08
Extraversion 0.71 (High) 0.70 +0.01
Agreeableness 0.66 (High) 0.70 -0.04
Neuroticism 0.38 (Low-Moderate) 0.35 +0.03

Adidas's campaign audience profile is the community-oriented achiever: High Conscientiousness, High Agreeableness, High Extraversion. Oral tradition and storytelling engagement. Strong in-group loyalty. Achievement orientation balanced with collaborative values. Responds to authority signals when they come from track record, not corporate posturing.

COS infers mixed ELM processing. Both peripheral cues (nostalgia, celebrity, narrative pleasure) AND central processing (heritage authority, systematic legacy, achievement evidence) contribute to persuasion. The 1996-to-2026 timeline and Zidane roulette callback reward analytical engagement. This is Adidas's persuasion surface area advantage. Nike's peripheral-only route limits how deeply the campaign can engage people who need to think before they buy.

No Adidas trait gap exceeds 0.10. Compare to Nike's Conscientiousness gap of 0.33. Adidas built a psychologically consistent campaign that doesn't fight itself. Nike built one that does.

OCEAN Comparison

Trait Nike Adidas Delta
Openness 0.78 0.62 Nike +0.16
Conscientiousness 0.32 0.68 Adidas +0.36
Extraversion 0.72 0.71 Equal
Agreeableness 0.38 0.66 Adidas +0.28
Neuroticism 0.55 0.38 Adidas more stable

The 0.36 Conscientiousness gap is the largest single OCEAN delta in this analysis. Nike's anti-conformist C=0.32 audience vs Adidas's community achiever C=0.68 audience represents near-opposite orientations on the trait most predictive of systematic professional engagement. Adidas's audiences are more likely to sustain brand loyalty (High C), engage in word-of-mouth (High E + High A), and respond to authority signals (High C). Nike's audience buys the identity. Adidas's audience builds the relationship.

Framework 1: HAPE (High Arousal, Positive Engagement)

HAPE measures whether content generates the psychological conditions for sustained attention and sharing. Scores derived from emotional arousal, authenticity signals, social connection triggers, and efficacy framing.

Nike: 7.4 | Adidas: 7.5 | Winner: Adidas (narrow)

Nike HAPE Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Identity Recognition 9.0
Authenticity 9.0
Justice and Fairness 8.0
Curiosity and Discovery 8.0
Social Connection 7.0
Coherence 7.0
Validation and Recognition 6.0
Efficacy and Agency 5.0

Nike earns identical Identity Recognition (9/10) and Authenticity (9/10) to Adidas by entirely different means. Being the non-sponsor makes the "interloper" creative feel structurally earned. The Efficacy gap (5/10) is the shared failure: both campaigns function as spectacle, not actionable frameworks. The content offers no next move.

Adidas HAPE Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Identity Recognition 9.0
Authenticity 9.0
Social Connection 8.0
Curiosity and Discovery 8.0
Coherence 8.0
Justice and Fairness 7.0
Validation and Recognition 6.0
Efficacy and Agency 5.0

Adidas edges Nike on Social Connection (8.0 vs 7.0) and Coherence (8.0 vs 7.0). The three-act challenge structure (1996 legend, 2002 Zidane roulette, 2026 reckoning) is retellable. Nike's Hollywood chaos ensemble is watchable but harder to track. "Based on a true story. Probably." is four words that make an oral tradition format feel both credible and playful.

Framework 2: Big Five (Personality Fit)

Big Five measures how well campaign personality signals align with the stated target audience's personality profile. This is where the largest performance gap between the two brands appears.

Nike: 8.6 | Adidas: 9.1 | Winner: Adidas (decisive)

Nike Big Five Dimension Breakdown

Trait Framework Match Content Signal Target Gap
Openness 9.5 0.85 0.80 +0.05
Conscientiousness 8.0 0.35 0.55 -0.20
Extraversion 8.5 0.90 0.75 +0.15
Agreeableness 9.0 0.35 0.40 -0.05
Neuroticism 8.0 0.20 0.30 -0.10

The -0.20 Conscientiousness gap is Nike's central irony. The execution was highly organized (12-week Polaroid buildup, 5,000+ retail refreshes), but the messaging celebrates chaos. Nike's organization built something rigorously systematic to tell its audience to reject rigor and systems. The B2B professionals it targets built their careers on the opposite of that message.

"Ditch the playbook, embrace attacking, creative, instinctive and joyful football" is a direct instruction to a High C buyer telling them their professional approach is wrong.

Adidas Big Five Dimension Breakdown

Trait Framework Match Content Signal Target Gap
Openness 9.0 0.75 0.65 +0.10
Conscientiousness 8.5 0.55 0.60 -0.05
Extraversion 9.0 0.75 0.70 +0.05
Agreeableness 9.5 0.75 0.70 +0.05
Neuroticism 9.5 0.35 0.35 0.00

9.1 is the highest single-framework score across either full analysis. No trait gap exceeds 0.10. Neuroticism calibration is perfect (9.5, zero gap). This is what a psychologically consistent campaign looks like: every signal pointing the same direction, no dimension fighting another.

Adidas's Neuroticism calibration at zero gap (and 9.5/10) is the least-discussed strength in this analysis. The campaign never threatens, never pressures, never generates performance anxiety. "Self-belief and playfulness are the real winning mindset" is not a coaching platitude. It's a precision Neuroticism calibration choice.

Framework 3: Strategic Clarity

Strategic Clarity measures whether the campaign knows who it's talking to, what it's offering, and what it wants the audience to do next.

Nike: 5.8 | Adidas: 6.2 | Winner: Adidas

Nike Strategic Clarity Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Differentiation 9.0
Messaging Consistency 8.0
Audience Targeting 6.0
Value Proposition Clarity 4.0
CTA Effectiveness 2.0

Nike scored 9/10 on Differentiation and 4/10 on Value Prop Clarity. The brand knows exactly who it is. It can't tell you why you should care. Three audiences (football fans 18-35, anti-conformist creatives, B2B marketers) are in the frame. None receives a CTA calibrated to them. LinkedIn is the stated platform, but two of three audiences don't consume sport/culture content there. The one audience that IS on LinkedIn (the B2B marketer) gets no professional consumption packaging: no case study framing, no ROI language, no "what marketers can learn" hook.

CTA score: 2/10. 80 million views with no next step.

Adidas Strategic Clarity Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Differentiation 9.0
Audience Targeting 8.0
Messaging Consistency 7.0
Value Proposition Clarity 4.0
CTA Effectiveness 3.0

Adidas also scores 9/10 on Differentiation and 4/10 on Value Prop Clarity. "Where there's a pitch, there's a legend" is one of the best taglines in either campaign: timeless positioning that neither competitor can replicate. The Audience Targeting (8/10 vs Nike's 6/10) is the differentiating dimension. Heritage fans via Beckham/Zidane, Gen-Z via Yamal/Bellingham/Chalamet, values-based segments via grassroots authenticity. Three audiences, three natural entry points. Each can self-identify without being called out.

CTA score: 3/10. Marginally better than Nike. Still essentially zero.

Framework 4: Framing Strategy

Framing measures whether the campaign's central cognitive frame is clear, coherent, and matched to the audience's moral foundations.

Nike: 7.4 | Adidas: 7.8 | Winner: Adidas

This is the framework that reversed between COS runs. In the first run, COS assessed Nike's Liberty/Rebellion frame as clearly superior (7.2 vs 6.0). The second run assessed Adidas's "Sport as Mythic Oral Tradition" frame as equally clear (Frame Clarity tied at 9/10), and the broader semantic and moral foundation scoring moved in Adidas's direction.

Nike Framing Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Frame Clarity 9.0
Audience Receptivity 8.0
Semantic Equivalence 8.0
Moral Foundations Fit 7.0
Power Positioning 5.0

"Rip the Script" is simultaneously the tagline and the creative brief. One concept, total commitment. The Frame Clarity (9/10) is deserved. The Power Positioning score (5/10) reflects a structural vulnerability: a $50B corporation positioning as anti-establishment enabler. That tension doesn't break the frame, but analytically-oriented viewers notice it.

Adidas Framing Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Frame Clarity 9.0
Semantic Equivalence 9.0
Audience Receptivity 8.0
Moral Foundations Fit 7.0
Power Positioning 6.0

"Sport as Mythic Oral Tradition" is the primary frame: football as living legend transmitted through community storytelling and intergenerational challenge. Frame Clarity 9/10 matched Nike. Semantic Equivalence 9/10 exceeded Nike (8.0) because the core message preserves across Loyalty, Care, and Sanctity foundation transformations. "Based on a true story. Probably." encapsulates the entire frame in five words.

The local kids beat Zidane using his own move. No one could verify the score. No one needed to. That is oral tradition. The score doesn't matter. The story does.

Framework 5: Persuasion / Business Domain

Persuasion/Business measures professional tone, decision facilitation architecture, ROI clarity, and trust-building signals for B2B-oriented audiences.

Nike: 7.4 | Adidas: 6.5 | Winner: Nike (its only framework win)

Nike Persuasion Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Achievement Motivation 8.5
Professional Tone 8.0
Trust Building 7.5
Authority and Credibility 7.0
ROI Clarity 6.0
Decision Facilitation 5.5

Nike's Persuasion win is real. Professional Tone (8.0 vs Adidas 6.5), Decision Facilitation (5.5 vs Adidas 3.0), ROI Clarity (6.0 vs Adidas 4.5). Nike has better conversion architecture than Adidas on every persuasion dimension.

The problem is architectural: the right persuasion mechanics are running through the wrong persona. A High C buyer processes information centrally. They want the argument. "Rip the Script" is an experience. That is different from a reason.

Adidas Persuasion Dimension Breakdown

Dimension Score
Achievement Motivation 8.5
Trust Building 7.5
Authority and Credibility 7.0
Professional Tone 6.5
ROI Clarity 4.5
Decision Facilitation 3.0

Adidas's Decision Facilitation (3.0) is the lowest dimension score in either full analysis. 8.4 million people watched a beautifully constructed film about oral tradition and legacy. Then the film ended. The audience had nowhere to go.

Official FIFA sponsorship, both finalists in Adidas kits, Zidane and Beckham and Bellingham on screen: that is unassailable trust. None of it connects to a conversion path.

What Both Campaigns Got Wrong

Both campaigns scored:

  • Differentiation: 9/10 (they know exactly who they are)
  • Value Prop Clarity: 4/10 (they can't tell you why you should care)
  • Nike CTA: 2/10 | Adidas CTA: 3/10

Combined spend in the hundreds of millions. Neither campaign gave its audience anything to do.

This is not a Nike-or-Adidas problem. COS sees this pattern across brand campaigns at scale. "Who we are" is a solved problem for established brands. "What you should do about it" is where campaigns go quiet. Identity is built. Commercial intent is abandoned.

Neither campaign asked its most important question: now what?

COS Methodology

COS scores content against five psychological frameworks, each grounded in peer-reviewed research:

  • HAPE (Engagement): Draws on arousal theory, self-determination theory, and psychological need satisfaction research
  • Big Five (Personality Fit): Maps content signals to the Five Factor Model of personality; compares against target audience profile
  • Strategic Clarity: Business communication effectiveness derived from decision-making and persuasion research
  • Framing Strategy: Cognitive linguistics and Moral Foundations Theory
  • Persuasion / Business Domain: Cialdini's influence principles, ELM (Elaboration Likelihood Model), and B2B buyer psychology

Scores are generated by the COS API, not by human judgment. This teardown used 12 API calls across both brands and 5 frameworks. All scores trace to raw JSON response files. View counts sourced from press context (HIGH confidence). No fabricated data.

COS is not a virality predictor. Nike's 80M views vs Adidas's 8.4M is the distribution outcome of media spend, celebrity casting, and cultural timing. COS measures whether a campaign's psychological signals match the audience it is meant to persuade. The view gap and the psychology gap point in opposite directions. That is the finding.
