5 Signals That Tell You Your Ad Copy Has Personality Drift
Ad copy fails in two ways: the obvious way (bad offer, wrong channel, weak CTA) and the invisible way. The invisible way is personality drift, copy that has regressed toward generic professional language without anyone noticing, because each individual edit seemed fine at the time.

What Personality Drift Actually Means
Personality drift is not the same as bad writing. Drifted copy is often grammatically clean, structurally correct, and professionally toned. What's missing is specificity about who it's written for.
Every buyer has a dominant personality profile that shapes how they process claims, evaluate credibility, and decide whether the next sentence is worth reading. In B2B ad copy, two do most of the work: Conscientiousness (drives a need for evidence, structure, and precision) and Openness (drives a need for conceptual framing and possibility).
Copy that targets high-Conscientiousness buyers looks different, at a structural level, from copy that targets high-Openness buyers. Drifted copy looks like neither. It's the output you get when a skilled writer, a polished AI prompt, or an over-edited team draft lands on the statistical middle, the intersection of "sounds professional" and "offends no one." That middle position is legible to everyone and persuasive to no one.
The drift isn't always obvious from reading the final piece. Which is the point of having a detection system.
The 5 Signals
Signal 1: Adjective Overload Without a Load-Bearing Noun
High-Conscientiousness copy relies on verifiable specifics. High-Openness copy uses conceptual frames. Drifted copy uses adjectives.
Adjective-heavy phrases ("powerful," "comprehensive," "innovative," "seamless," "world-class") are the modal form of B2B ad copy because they feel substantive without requiring any claim to be verified. They're not wrong, in the sense that no reader can directly disprove them. But they also don't communicate anything.
The Analyzer flags copy where the adjective-to-specific-claim ratio is inverted. One "robust analytics suite" next to "33% reduction in time-to-close" is fine. A headline that runs four adjectives in a row with no anchoring noun or specific proof is a drift signal. The copy has substituted modifier density for argument.
Signal 2: Prevention/Promotion Frame Collapse
Buyer motivation comes in two basic forms: moving toward a gain (promotion focus) or moving away from a loss (prevention focus). High-Conscientiousness buyers are disproportionately prevention-focused, they're motivated by risk mitigation, cost containment, and avoiding bad outcomes. High-Openness buyers skew promotion, they're motivated by upside, possibility, and new capability.
Drifted copy collapses both frames into a single sentence that tries to serve both. "Unlock growth while reducing operational risk" is the canonical form. It sounds comprehensive. It reads as unfocused. Neither the promotion-focused buyer nor the prevention-focused buyer sees their specific motivation reflected back to them with enough clarity to lean in.
The Analyzer checks whether the framing mode is coherent throughout the piece or whether it switches direction mid-sentence or mid-section in ways that suggest the writer was hedging rather than choosing.
Signal 3: Register Inconsistency
Register is the social formality level of language, how a piece positions itself relative to the reader. Technical register (precise terminology, formal sentence structure, references to process) signals expertise and peer-level authority. Conversational register (contractions, short sentences, direct address, colloquial rhythm) signals approachability and confidence. Neither is wrong. Switching between them mid-copy without a structural reason is a drift signal.
Generic B2B ad copy often code-switches in ways that reveal the writer wasn't committed to an audience. The paragraph opens in executive boardroom language, the bullet points shift to vendor-feature language, and the CTA lands in casual-friendly language. The reader doesn't experience this as "versatile", she experiences it as "unclear who wrote this and who they were writing for."
The Analyzer traces register consistency across the headline, body, and CTA. A coherent piece holds register within a band (a slight relaxation from headline to CTA is normal and intentional). Radical register swings are a signal that the copy was patched from different sources without alignment back to a single personality target.
Signal 4: Evidence Type Mismatch
What counts as proof varies by personality profile. High-Conscientiousness buyers are moved by numbers, studies, named customers, and documented methodologies. Vague social proof ("thousands of companies trust us") reads to them as a dodge, if the evidence were strong, it would be specific. High-Openness buyers are moved by conceptual coherence, analogies, and well-framed case narratives. A wall of data points without a frame to hang them on doesn't satisfy them; it overwhelms.
Evidence type mismatch happens in two directions:
- Quantitative evidence in Openness-targeted copy that's never contextualized into meaning ("37 integrations", so what?)
- Qualitative or social-proof evidence in Conscientiousness-targeted copy where buyers have been trained to distrust exactly this pattern ("Our customers love the ROI", show the ROI)
The Analyzer identifies whether the evidence type in the copy is coherent with the personality profile established by other signals, or whether the evidence type contradicts the rest of the targeting, a pattern that often emerges when a copywriter added "proof points" from a different version of the asset without recalibrating.
Signal 5: CTA-to-Body Misalignment
The CTA is the highest-stakes sentence in the piece. It's also the most frequently swapped, teams often reuse standard CTA language ("Book a demo," "Get started free," "See it in action") regardless of what the body of the copy established as the frame.
CTA-to-body misalignment is a drift signal because it reveals the copy wasn't written as a coherent unit. A body that spent three paragraphs building a prevention-focused case ("stop losing budget to..." / "before your next cycle runs...") ending in a growth-oriented CTA ("Unlock your potential") lands wrong. The reader has been moved into risk-mitigation mode and the CTA asks them to think expansively. The frame breaks.
The Analyzer checks whether the CTA register, framing mode, and specificity level are continuous with the body, or whether the CTA reads like it was lifted from a different campaign and grafted onto this one. The latter is one of the most common patterns in scaled ad production, and one of the hardest to catch in human review because the CTA looks fine in isolation.
Why AI Generation Produces Drift Systematically
Temperature=0 AI generation maximizes probability. Personality-specific copy is, by definition, statistically less common than generic copy, the entire training distribution of B2B ad copy skews toward the middle register that the largest number of professional readers can receive without friction. Generating at temperature=0 produces the modal form of "professional B2B ad copy," which is also the maximally drifted form.
This is not a bug in a specific model or a prompt engineering failure. It's the correct output for the specified objective function. "Predict the most likely next tokens given B2B ad context" will always produce something closer to "Transform your workflow with comprehensive insights" than to "Your CFO is skimming this in 12 seconds. She needs the annual cost figure in sentence one."
The five drift signals above are amplified in AI output because they're all expressions of the same underlying phenomenon: regression to the statistical mean of B2B professional language. Adjective overload is statistically safe. Frame collapse is what happens when the model has seen both promotion and prevention copy in its training set and generates from the interpolated space between them. Register inconsistency is what happens when training documents had different registers and the model learned them all without learning the rule for when to use which.
Temperature alone doesn't fix this. Personality-grounded generation does, which requires either explicit OCEAN constraints in the generation prompt, or a detection layer that catches drift before the copy ships.

Drift signals present: adjective chain (powerful, comprehensive, measurable, seamless), frame collapse (transform/optimize = promotion; "results" is vague enough to serve either), register inconsistency (executive in sentence one, vendor-feature in sentence two), evidence type: none, CTA implied as generic ("get a demo" type).
Non-drifted (high-Conscientiousness target):
"You're spending $40K/month on LinkedIn ads. Before next cycle, you need to know which copy variants are mismatched to your ICP's personality profile, not after the spend is gone. The Ad Copy Analyzer scores your creative against OCEAN trait data before you press publish."
Signals resolved: specific dollar figure as anchor, prevention frame consistent throughout, technical/executive register held, evidence type is structural (specific process, specific output), CTA implied as: see proof then act.
